Part I: We must first look at the “Great Migration” over 300 years earlier than the era of book one: Dark Deception. The “Great Migration” refers to the mass migration of humans from the newly acquired kingdom, Mercillia, by the House of Mezimier.
Without getting too far back into the history of Mercillia, the biggest takeaway to know is that the greatest contributor to the migration itself was the tyrannical rule of the Mezimier family; Centered within the capital of Ankaara, the harsh policies and militarization of its people created an undesirable environment for the average citizen. Differing from the previous rule and law, Mercillians saw that fleeing was the only way to avoid extreme taxation and forced military service where many ended up dying whilst fighting friends and family within the region of Karpatheon.
This bloody warpath was due to the Mezimier family’s ambition for increased power and wealth.
With the mass exodus, Mercillians fled out and away, many of which ended up finding the narrow and deadly passage that they titled “Salvation Pass”. Once in the mysterious land of Cirventia, they were greeted peacefully by the curious elves of Trivinnia, and guided to a place that they could call home. DunnChester.
Abundant enough to satisfy anyone to stay near its resources, abundant enough to stay away from the elven hold of Trivinnia. The elves’ decision in guiding the refugees here was no mistake, for they knew very little of these humans – or any humans for that matter – and were in no position of needing nor wanting change within their homelands.
DunnChester was far enough to avoid contact with these outsiders, but close enough to keep an eye on.
